Fairy Lights to Guide Us | prologue

Title: Fairy Lights to Guide Us | prologue
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Yi Fan/Baekhyun, Chanyeol/Baekhyun (others: Joonmyun/Baekhyun, Sehun/Luhan, Minseok/Luhan, some other...)
Summary: Baekhyun is the Assistant Team Leader for SM Mission and he's decided to start an education camp for the refugee omegas. No close-minded alphas and betas are going to stop him from liberating the 'submissives'.
Warnings: a/b/o dynamics, minor character deaths, child death/murder, rape/sexual abuse/dub con, physical abuse, mpreg, mutilation, xenophobia, genocide, asshole characters, other triggering and sensitive content. Too much shit to list down properly.
A/N: Posting this, I am nervous as FUCK! You can see all the fanciful html shit I put in while thinking if I should put this up or keep it to myself. I started drawing a plot for this in late 2014, uploaded it to my account in Jan this year, and stopped after a few updates b/c some things hit me later on. I'm putting this here to see what kind of reaction I'm getting, and depending on that I'm either going to lock or continue.

Originally I wanted to center something on women's rights, but then layered it over a/b/o (especially omegas) b/c it's not hard to see the similarities b/w these two, so different but so alike. Also, a/b/o is one of my favourite troupes.

This fic is more or less based on my experiences as a volunteer for social services (esp in cases of IDPs and disaster relief) in a conservative society. Events occurring in this fic are untrue or exaggerated for the sake of story telling, but are more or less inspired by true events.
Right now I have more things to say, purely out of nervousness and 1/10th out of excitement, so I think it's better to zip my mouth shut and let you read.

Glossary of recurring terms
ATL: Assistant Team Leader
Joseon: the host country -- Baekhyun's home
Hanseong: the capital city of Joseon
Xiana: neighbouring country to Joseon
JAF Disaster Relief: Joseon Armed Forces Disaster Relief

Fairy Lights to Guide Us | prologue

When Baekhyun spots Joonmyun cutting across the room to approach him during the graduation dinner, he mentally starts rehearsing the speech he prepared exactly for this moment -- I like you. I like that you have money and that you wear it and smell of it, but it's never going to work out between us. I'm not ready to settle down and your mother clearly hates me. He tosses his head back and finishes his drink in a few large gulps because one needs that extra shot of alcohol in their system in order to break the heart of someone as sweet as Joonmyun.

He's by Baekhyun's side before the latter's had a chance to brush away the invisible dirt on his suit or check if his hair is alright.

Infact, before he can even open his mouth to reject Joonmyun's every argument --maybe he had a glass or two too many because his responses are seconds too slow-- the other has already put out his cards.

"I'm making a team to go to Ground Zero and I want you in it."

Baekhyun blinks.

It is not a request. It is a statement.

It takes Baekhyun half a minute to comprehend that Joonmyun isn't asking to get back together. It takes another half minute to appreciate how fine Joonmyun looks in a suit tailored to fit his form, and what a loss of perfect-boyfriend he is. If only Joonmyun hadn't proposed marriage they might still have been together.

Baekhyun knows Ground Zero is something Joonmyun has been interested in for a long time. It's been a raging topic for a while now and he himself is an active social worker at his university, discussing these things at the office at every opportune moment, too. The two are now exes, so Joonmyun only calls for work and he treats Baekhyun as any of his other employees.

That is probably one of his best qualities, as a person and as an alpha: his professionalism. Joonmyun keeps his business and private life separate. His personality takes a 180 as soon as he steps into his company building. He doesn't mind having workplace relationships, granted they pretend not to be in a relationship at the office, but as soon they clock out, Joonmyun becomes the epitome of loving and caring. He's the ideal boyfriend anyone would want. He has money, looks, a stainless reputation, expensive tastes which he can entertain, has the whole fucking company now, but ... he's looking to settle down and Baekhyun doesn't do permanent relationships.

It's a good thing Joonmyun doesn't hold onto the past or grudges, or maybe he's that good at masking his feelings because he doesn't bully Baekhyun for quitting their relationship so abruptly. Nothing changes between them in the workplace, but everything changes in Baekhyun's daily life.

Despite knowing Joonmyun so well, knowing that he's only putting Baekhyun in the team for his skills and not nepotism, he still wants to clarify some important things.

"We're not going to fuck, right?"

Definitely had too much to drink..

That was more than an year ago, on the night of Baekhyun's graduation.

Currently, he stands at Hanseong railway station, sweltering under the summer sun. He rechecks his ticket to make sure he's at the right spot, and then checks the time on his phone to gape in disbelief at how Joonmyun managed to get this late.

Kim Joonmyun becomes an exemplary figure wherever he goes. He is always ahead of time, even on his dates --or at least he used to be on any date he had with Baekhyun-- so it's hard to digest that he's late when they have a train to catch and business to attend.

He looks around himself to the team that was rushed to be put together by Mr. Perfect himself. They've come together many times the past month to break the ice and discuss the projects they will be working on in Ground Zero. There are seven vigorous members finalized for this mission: Joonmyun, the undisputed leader, with Baekhyun as his Assistant Team Leader and the only omega in the group. Park Chanyeol, an old university friend of Baekhyun's, rounds up as the only other alpha on the team. The remaining members are all betas, a sour faced Do Kyungsoo, jovial Kim Jongdae, an undergrad Kim Jongin, who also happens to be Joonmyun's younger cousin, and finally, a Xianian native Huang Zitao.

Huang will serve as their translator. He's also aiming to get closer to his roots by visiting Ground Zero, having immigrated to Joseon at an early age with his family.

"I'm pretty sure Joonmyun is dead. He's never been this late for anything." Jongdae whines as he fans himself with his ticket. Zitao nods his head in miserable agreement.

"There he is!" Jongin perks up, jumping off the bench and startling Kyungsoo who's seated next to him.

Joonmyun looks utterly harassed, accompanied by a person with a stick thin figure, platinum blond hair and skin to be envious of. Baekhyun prays their Team Leader didn't just bring his new boyfriend on this mission because the stranger reeks of money and attitude.

"I'm terribly sorry, everyone! There were some unforeseen incidents and- I'm really sorry. This will never happen again!" Joonmyun bows and apologizes profusely.

"It's okay, Team Leader." Chanyeol smiles reassuringly. For an alpha, he has none of the intimidation and all the charms of one.

No one asks about the newcomer with branded sunglasses and manicured nails. However, silent inquiring glances pass around as Joonmyun pats his pockets for the tickets. Baekhyun glares particularly hard at Jongin, but when all he gets back is a wide eyed, confused look, he knows Joonmyun's cousin is just as clueless as he is.

"Guys, this is Lu Han. He was a last minute addition to the mission."

"Clearly," Baekhyun snorts. He feels offended he wasn't informed even though he serves as the Assistant Team Leader. It is his job, his duty, to be aware of everything, and Joonmyun is supposed to inform him of such an important decision.

"His father is the Xianian ambassador to Joseon, also a part of the consulate, and he's going to be funding us. Lu Han has volunteered to be our translator," Joonmyun informs. Baekhyun can hear Zitao murmur 'I thought I was the translator' from somewhere in the back.

Baekhyun already dislikes Lu Han.

They're going to a refugee camp, the goddamned Ground Zero and Lu Han, instead of choosing practical clothes, decides to wear the most expensive seasonal brands he has in his closet. Baekhyun already knows what other clothes this newbie would have packed for this trip.

He thinks it's ridiculous, fucking ridiculous, that they're going to a place where thousands of displaced Xianian citizens are staying in something akin to poverty, and Lu Han, a Xianian by blood, is going to be flaunting money in everyone's faces. This person is the ideal example of an omega pampered, spoiled and now wanton for attention.

Baekhyun doesn't know what Lu Han aims to achieve by going to Ground Zero, because people like him always come with motives. If he's on a gold digging mission though, it's going to flop miserably. Rich kid Joonmyun isn't easily swayed, and it's hard for Baekhyun to swallow since sometimes he wishes for it too, but he knows Joonmyun still wants to reignite what they had between them.

The alpha is resilient to a fault. Work and fun never mix for him. He'll only be seeing Lu Han with the eyes of an employer. So if Lu Han really is here with odd motives, he's going to fail.

Just like Chanyeol's stupid unneeded guitar is going to break before they even reach their destination, and how Jongin's stupid poodle is going to be a pain in the ass for them all.

On the train, the team has a cabin all to themselves. Thanks to Lu Han apparently. 'Security reasons', the omega had said in his soft, barely audible voice, before they boarded.

What. The. Fuck.

They might as well have brought along a bulky bodyguard. Or two hundred.

Baekhyun honestly-not-really tries to get to know Lu Han, but then he looks at the omega playing games on his touch pad and he loses it. His thoughts don't go in vain. Chanyeol tries to strike up a conversation with the Xianian omega, only to receive a once-over from Lu Han before the omega resumes his game. He only says a halfhearted 'Ok' in response to Chanyeol's lengthy narration which ends with a question directed towards Lu Han.

Ok?

Really?

Not ok.

"Joonmyun," Baekhyun chases the Team Leader when he leaves for the toilet, "What the hell is that, Joonmyun? This is not a pity party or tour group. You made a team of competent people for a task that requires only competent people. That person in there? He's a wire-frame model wannabe and he is not supposed to be here. He looks like he doesn't even know our vision statement, let alone where we're headed to and why!"

Joonmyun runs a hand through his hair and mutters an apology. "I'm really sorry Baekhyun. Everything happened so suddenly last night. I tried to get out of it, but I couldn't. You know how I feel about my father."

Baekhyun's shoulders sag in defeat.

"What do we do with him? Do we turn him into the face of our team? May be people will contribute more to our cause then?" He tries not to sound scornful.

"He's a good person," Joonmyun replies.

Baekhyun scoffs. "He's wearing clothes that cost me a month's salary."

"I talked to him about it but he didn't have anything apart from-"

"Oh my God!" Baekhyun throws his hands up. "This is fantastic! Fucking fantastic!"

"He really does want to help out. Lu Han's really determined. When I told him our-"

"Can you look me in the eyes and tell me he'll be doing more than teaching kids how to braid their hair? Does he even know how to braid it in the first place?" Baekhyun snaps, "I'm not the only one having a problem here, Joonmyun. We've worked hard for this day. We've planned for months and then this ambassador for the filthy rich comes along for a joy ride. It's offensive! Just take a look at everyone's faces. They want to know why he's here among them."

"Please," Joonmyun pleads, "Try to make him fit in. He's already here and we can't get rid of him. Best to make him useful instead of isolating him."

Joonmyun isn't wrong. He rarely ever is. Baekhyun thinks Lu Han should be able to wash dishes, at least.

He shakes his head to ward off spiteful thoughts.

"Something will work out." Baekhyun says. He only really wanted to blow off steam. Baekhyun knew there was nothing he could do if Joonmyun brought a new member, and as the Assistant Team Leader his duty was to support the Team Leader.

He decides to observe Lu Han and see what position they can give him. The omega seems pretty educated. Seems being the key word. He at least looks like he can handle simple paperwork.

After a five hours journey, the train stops at a small town where the team is to depart. Lu Han keeps himself glued to Joonmyun, asking him why they took the train when they could have taken their own vehicles, and Baekhyun just barely stops himself from rolling his eyes. If Lu Han had attended one of their meetings he would have known it was for economical and practical reasons. They are bringing not only their own luggage but tons of relief goods as well.

Joonymun places a call to their escort and within the minute two uniformed men approach them.

"Major Wu Yi Fan," The taller of the two greets as he extends his hand for Joonmyun to shake, "Disaster-relief, Joseon Armed Forces."

Joonmyun does well to hide his surprise at the foreign name. "Kim Joonmyun, I'm the Team Leader for SM Mission," He introduces, "This is Byun Baekhyun, the Assistant Team Leader." Yi Fan isn't so good at hiding his emotions.

Baekhyun can read his face almost as if the man is screaming his thoughts out loud - OMEGA!? ASSISTANT TEAM LEADER? The rest of the team is quickly introduced and no pleasantries are exchanged. All of them are intimidated by the officer's tall stature.

"This is Captain Oh Sehun, from NIS." Yi Fan introduces the second uniformed man. A few members of the team exchange curious glances, 'National Intelligence Service? Why are they here?' Baekhyun can hear Jongin whisper to Kyungsoo.

Joonmyun mentions the relief goods they've brought and points out the cabin they were settled in. It takes almost an hour for everything to be reloaded onto trucks which directly hit the road for Ground Zero. Their escorts were already prepared with everything, which is unsurprising since they had been given a detailed list of items the team was bringing.

The next two hours are spent in an office in the middle of the town, which is in the middle of nowhere, where the heat is insufferable and the NIS Officer checks their papers and personal luggage. He raises a brow at Jongin's dog, at Chanyeol's guitar, at Lu Han's luggage, at the fairy lights in Jongdae's messenger bag and Baekhyun just about gets ready to dig his own grave and bury himself in it from shame.

Captain Oh asks them random questions, some pertaining to things mentioned in their papers, others absolutely random like Kyungsoo's favourite color, the meaning of Jongin's name and if Lu Han is in a relationship. Major Wu inquires if they want to make a stop at the convenience store because Ground Zero is three hours drive from civilization and only two trips a month are made for restockage.

No one except Lu Han needs to make the trip. He leaves with Joonmyun and Maj. Wu, only to return twenty minutes later with a handbag full of snacks.

Maj. Wu's face is hardened into stone and Joonmyun doesn't look pleased either.
Identification tags with neck strings are distributed among them before the team is directed towards an empty bus, already carrying their luggage.

On the three hours it takes from the small, unknown, military-overrun town to reach Ground Zero, Baekhyun ponders on many things. The foremost is the filthy rumours usually spread for the defamation of the military, but it really does seem like the defense force only inducts alphas. Every uniformed person in the town had been an alpha, and they were all supposedly from 'Disaster Relief'.

Baekhyun looks over his shoulder at the small team of enthusiastic youths.

Jongin has his poodle nestled on his lap and they both stare out at the endless flat planes. Kyungsoo and Joonmyun are engaged in a discussion, while Jongdae and Chanyeol are deep asleep. Tao's head constantly droops as he tries to fight off his own exhaustion. Lu Han is busy on his touchpad, munching his snacks. Baekhyun almost pops a vein.

He turns back forward and catches Maj. Wu staring at him.

"Byun Baekbeom?" The officer asks in his deep but clear voice.

"Baekhyun," The omega corrects and tries not fret over Baekbeom being his elder brother's name. The Byun brothers look remarkably alike but Yi Fan can't know that. Right? He thinks so.

The officer nods before he crosses his arms and turns his attention to the dirt road ahead. "Why do you want to go to Ground Zero?" In other words, he wants to know why a pretty faced, single omega like Baekhyun is interested in humanitarian causes instead of marrying someone and getting ready to pop out babies.

Ground Zero has been dubbed a 'death trap' in some exaggerated news reports.

It was a camp set up by the Joseon Armed Forces when Xianian immigrants crossed the yearly threshold of applying for Joseon citizenship, as a civil war broke out in their country, turning them from immigrants to refugees. The Liberation Force, a banned outfit in Xiana, started terror attacks on common citizens, apart from their usual targets of government installations. It forced people to flee the country of terror as the LF troops resolved to overthrow the government and bring a 'new order'. Joseon, unprepared and incapable of absorbing such a large number of displaced people, closed applications for the Xianian and sealed its borders.

People who escaped their cities ran to Ground Zero, a middle ground between the Joseon and Xianian borders, hoping the Joseon military would bring them some form of salvation. In a short time, the amount of incoming refugees surpassed the handling capability of the Joseon Armed Forces Disaster Relief Department. There were too many people and not enough camps. The Department was unprepared and the government played its cards poorly, sending only minimal help and refusing to divert any money from other large scale projects, or even the treasury, so not to 'encourage' the Xianians to burden the Joseon economy.

When the Joseon public became aware of Ground Zero, they sent their own support in form of donations. Half of it was lost in mismanagement. Public reports assured everyone that Ground Zero was just fine, but private reports painted an altogether different and ghastly picture.

Ground Zero became taboo. Something everyone knew of but never wanted to talk about because it was none of their business.

Baekhyun had always been the kid who stood up against bullies, looked after his youngsters, helped everyone everywhere he could and donated his old things. From middle school to high school he had participated in many charity runs and volunteered for a lot of social causes. He was always the odd omega out, but his behaviour was always encouraged by his parents whom themselves were avid givers. Helping the needy and looking after the suffering was as much a part of Baekhyun as his five senses were, and he was particularly sensitive to the cause of omegas. He grew up to be self reliant, forward, stubborn and rather brash in actions. It became problematic for his parents when they wanted him to look for a partner because Baekhyun was a bit too free spirited and not ready to have his wings clipped.

The stories about Ground Zero rattled Baekhyun. He was determined to help these people in any way he could. Half his monthly salary was always sent to JAF Disaster Relief. He wrote articles to rouse people into action and ran small charity events to collect things for the refugees.

Then came Joonmyun, a senior at his university and a person equally as passionate about helping humanity. He presented Baekhyun an opportunity that the omega would never have denied.

SM Mission started off with Joonmyun and Baekhyun and expanded all over Joseon, having particularly active members as the youth. Joonmyun had visited Ground Zero and came back with a burning resolve to return and help on the forefront. He finalized a small team, brought together in limited time because of the sudden granted permission, and briefed them on the needs of the refugees. The team planned through restless nights, with a lot of monetary support from Joonmyun's father and after pulling some political strings, was going in as the first civilian group to help in Ground Zero.

Baekhyun was looking forward to the experience. Working side-by-side with Joseon Armed Forces in order to help people...

Though at the very present moment, there was a small voice at the back of his head making him reconsider everything. He was already at the point of no return so there was no turning back anymore.

"You'll see when we get there," Baekhyun answers the officer, whom has turned back around to gaze inquiringly at him.

Baekhyun looks out the window to the darkening sky. The sun has set and is taking away the last of its light. The bus crossed the border line around twenty minutes ago and Ground Zero is not far now, or so the driver says.

By the time they reach the refugee camp, the sky is ink blue, the stars shine down and a half moon peeks at them from above. Wooden poles with lanterns are pitched in neat rows in a line that seems to extend to infinity. There is a distant hubbub but no people to be seen, and the camp spreads out till the horizon as a sea of stark white.

"There is a curfew at six PM," Major Wu announces to the small group, all huddled at the door of the bus and shivering in the surprisingly chilly night. "We see you loitering beyond six twenty and we take you in for detention, beyond seven and we shoot at sight."

Someone gasps -probably Lu Han, but it sounds oddly like Huang.

Baekhyun only frowns.

"Isn't this too severe?" Kyungsoo asks as his brows pull together.

"Security reasons," the officer answers.

A little smile tugs on Lu Han's lips as he recalls a memory. Baekhyun accidently-purposely steps on Lu Han's designer sandal when he passes the omega to get to Joonmyun.

"Get some rest guys, I'll gather you all at morning call and we'll hold our meeting then." The Team Leader announces.

"When is the morning call?" Jongin asks as he hugs his dog closer for warmth.

"Eight fifteen," Maj. Wu answers. Everyone starts to collect their luggage before Capt. Sehun informs them it will be taken care of. "Please follow me,"

The tents for the team are pitched among a row of olive green ones that probably house other military men. Those separated for them have small white flags tied to the front.

"We weren't aware you'd be bringing omegas in the team," Maj. Wu says, "we would have set up separate living spaces for them."

"I don't mind." Baekhyun shrugs his shoulders. Lu Han doesn't need to say anything because his face says it all. He does mind. Yi Fan's eyes linger questionably on Baekhyun before he addresses everyone again.

"Let's see what we can do tomorrow,"

Things become a sort of mess after that. Some soldiers bring their luggage but there's not enough space to house them and their possessions. Thus it is all sent back to the bus, where the interior light is turned on and they rummage through their suitcases for things they would need for the night. Baekhyun tries and succeeds in not peeking inside Lu Han's suitcase. Chanyeol has to help the Xianian omega close his bag after he pulls out his things and his twig thin arms fail him in closing it again.

"Lu Han is a bit helpless, don't you think?" Kyungsoo asks Baekhyun quietly, looking over at everyone as if making sure he remains unheard by anyone but the ATL.

"He's capable where needed, you'll see." Baekhyun answers, choosing not to look at Kyungsoo because his words are hollow. He tries to be a good Assistant Team Leader and not let his negative feelings affect the others. They are his personal opinions after all.

On the way to their new sleeping quarters, Baekhyun makes out the silhouettes of armed soldiers moving around the camp in the darkness. He sees their bulletproof vests and the full combat gear strapped on them when they step into the light of the lanterns.

It feels like they've left Joseon and entered some small dystopian dictatorship.

FORGIVE ME FOR ALL THE SHIT!!! this is just a test run Dx
Should I update the next part today? Is anyone interested? Laughing? Snorting? Angry? Rolling their eyes? Dx
this was a mistake wasn't it...

What mistake are you talking about! This seems like the opening of a masterpiece tbh. I have no idea what you plan to do with it, but the character introductions are amazing, I love Baekhyun, I'm side-eying Lu Han and twig thin arms, but I don't think any of this anywhere close to being bad. I want to see more. This looks like such a complicated but relevant au that I think you shouldn't be ashamed of. You can do it! <3

[identity profile] brittlepin.livejournal.com 2015-09-25 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh thank you! This means a lot! >.<
This au is tiring to work on, in a very different kind of way Dx It's a very different kind of emotional stress, and in the coming events I'm afraid of messing up character designs, situations etc. How do some people manage to juggle so many characters with such ease D':
/where is the fighting emoji when I need it /o\

Ohhh thank you! D':
This is a harrowing kind of au for me but I really really really want to work on it b/c, for some strange reason, it means a lot, haha. So I'm excited, but scared and nervous and feeling jitters every time I type it or post it or think about it OTL

[identity profile] ixxxrene.livejournal.com 2015-09-24 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
In the beginning I'm into Luhan, but then Baekhyun took over.
Baekhyun has a stronger presence and I like how his character is. ^^
I am excited to know about Baekhyun and his team's journey for their mission.

I'm really a fan of stories where you really have a crucial strong point,
besides the romance regardless how long they might turn out. ^^;;
(and definitely I need to be able to read them, so this is great!)

I have read some of your ABOs and I really like them.

Thank YOU for this love ♡~

This is one hell of a ride for me and I hope people reading it will feel the same way though unfortunately I can't guarantee a good ending OTL
I love romance, and plots, and abo, and something meaningful-ish (?) so, I think I threw it all together in this haha. I'd be very very interested in knowing how you feel about Luhan in the coming parts ^^

high anticipation for this
/sweats nervously

p.s, I AM SO GLAD YOU LIKE MY ABOs!!! it is like my fav troupe (and i think my abos are my fav self-written fics haha) I am trash and I not below admitting this OTL

Friends are always always always welcome! ;w; esp. fandom friends! Remaining in contact is a bit hard on LJ, but I found you somewhere else and I hope we can get to know each other more! :DDD and I cuss a LOT. Like an unhealthy amount D: so pls be warned in advance D:

I haven't read this yet but thank you for posting it and sharing it with us even though you felt some nervousness. I read the warnings and they're pretty heavy stuff that I wouldn't read from an author I don't already trust. And I definitely have trust in your writing! Be confident <3 I will read this tomorrow so I'm excited to have something to look forward to.

Thank you! Srsly, thank you! It seems you have more faith in me than I have in myself. Literally EVERYTHING in this fic makes me nervous, and I suppose the warnings aren't to be taken lightly b/c bad bad bad things are going to happen sooner or later Dx Most of the things will be passingly mentioned, and not effect the majority of the main characters
Ofc, me being a sucker for happy and romance will try to keep it light ... try ...

again, thank you! I hope this meets your expectations.

[identity profile] jonginsmuse.livejournal.com 2015-09-26 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok I read it and I'm definitely on board for more of this story. I love krisbaek and abo stories where omegas have a will and want to make their own life. Plus great world building in this prologue. I hope you continue posting <3

That's great to know! (╥‿╥) ♡
I'm soooo much more motivated than I was when I posted this, so I'll gradually post more ^^
